It's Spring and Strokestown Tidy Town Group is ready to take on 2024. To co-ordinate what we want to do we've created our 2024 Community Improvement Plan. This shows what we want to do and gives you an idea of where you can #GetInvolved and #MakeADifference. Get in touch if you'd like to know more. ☘️Ónár dteach go dtí mise, Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona duit. Guím gach rath oraibh don bhliain atá romhainn☘️ ☘️From our house to yours, Happy St Patrick’s Day. Wishing you all the best for the coming year☘️. If your club or group would like to "Fly your Flag" for your event, drop us a message to our Strokestown Tidy Town Group Facebook page and book the week of your event Another busy morning for Strokestown Tidy Town Group. Padraig was out the Longford Road cutting back the vegetation overhanging the footpath. We have been asking for this to be done the last 2 years and the issue was brought before local reps at Strokestown Town Team meetings but 🤷♂️🤷♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏻♂️ It now means that walkers can use that side of the path in full without having branches in their faces and eyes. With the closing date for hedge cutting fast approaching, we hope to have all the cutting back done in the coming weeks. With bulbs starting to burst from the ground it is a wonderful time to be out and about. Would you like to join in and be apart of an active group taking responsibility for making and keeing Strokestown look its best, give us a message and #Give1Hour 🌸⚘️🌻🥀🌺🪴🏵
Strokestown Tidy Town Group has launched our "Anti Dog Fouling" campaign. Over recent weeks our Core Group members, concerned residents and visitors have been keeping an eye on the level of dog fouling around Strokestown and, sadly, all have reported an increase. We have teamed up with Maire from Country Club Kennels, Laura from Laura's Canine Academy and Friends and the Environmental Department of Roscommon County Council to try and reduce this. Not cleaning up after your dog has a number of implications: HEALTH - especially for kids; MESS - on pram/wheelchair wheels, business floors, on shoes and pavements; OPINIONS - increasing numbers of people are visiting Strokestown … Dog Mess doesn’t encourage them to return; POCKETS - if you don’t clean up mess left by your dog you can be fined €150 on-the-spot and/or up to €3000 if taken to court. ALL AS A RESULT of a small number of residents and visitors not being bothered! Strokestown Tidy Towns Group and our friends are here to help: * Both Máire and Laura will be promoting positive ownership during dogs’ time in their care, including reminding owners of associated responsibilities (i.e. picking up after your dog!!); * We have installed Muttmitts Ireland bins in 2 locations this year and with the ongoing help of Roscommon County Council: Environmental Department (Conor, Jonathan, Annette and Danny) we’re planning for more of these to be placed around town. We will be visiting local businesses who are supporting our efforts and we hope YOU WILL TOO. A HUGE thank you to the Green Hub Gardening Club, and especially Beverley and Byron, for the warmth of their welcome and their beautiful garden … an oasis of colour, calm and abundant fruit and flowers … and for their continued support and assistance with the planting scheme in Strokestown which has received so much positive feedback.
Below are a few of Byron's specialist images of the afternoon.
After the excitement of last weekend, this week Strokestown Tidy Town Group are delighted to be hosting Kiltrustansports Club on the community flag pole. Their annual Sports Day is June 25th with all the traditional sporting track and field events and some novelty games for young and old to try. Situated on the Aughrim Kilmore Parish road towards the The Silver Eel, B&B & Restaurant out of Strokestown, it is ideally located close enough for Carrick On Shannon Entertainment to help promote. A fantastic facility with flood lit running/walking track and changing facilities, it is a hidden gem and another superb addition to the Sliabh Báwn Community Amenity Group hinterlands. See you all on the 25th and have your runners ready.

Another happy customer of the Strokestown Tidy Town Group Community Flagpole 😁 If you weren’t already aware (if not, why not 🤣) Sliabh Bán A/C is holding its 2023 10k Road Race on 11th June 2023 🏃♀️🏃🏻🏃♂️ All monies raised are being donated to a fantastic county charity, Down Syndrome Ireland, Roscommon 👏👏 Pictured below are key members of Sliabh Bán A/C (including the wonderful Strokestown Tidy Towns Group Secretary, Martina Flanagan O'Connor 😄), the Colums (Claire, Mattie, Matthew & Daniel) from Down Syndrome Ireland (Roscommon) and Aidan from Strokestown Park (who have kindly agreed for the race to finish in the grounds of Park House). If you’re taking part … well done and good luck ☘️ If you’ve sponsored or donated … thank you 🫶 … if you’d like to, just contact Sliabh Bán A/C 🤞 Earlier this week, Strokestown Tidy Town Group had the pleasure of assisting the Strokestown Men's Shed in "Flying The Flag" for themselves. The Men's Shed have come through some very tough times recently but they have come through them👏🤝. Well done to PJ Martin and Neill Martin of Martin's Guesthouse (along with Siobhán) who have facilitated the Men's Shed in Strokestown for the future 🖤💛
This week as part of the An Taisce National Spring Clean month, Strokestown Tidy Town Group are out and about in the area meeting National School pupils and teachers. Today we were in beautiful Clooncagh Primary School and, with the stunning sunshine beaming down, it’s clear to see why the kids absolutely loved it … items like radios, teapots and traffic cones bringing amusement to and questions from the kids. Thanks to Annette Woods Donlon for her support providing some of the equipment to help and also her part in collecting the materials we removed. A mention of thanks to the Sliabh Báwn Community Amenity Group who provided the RTV for traffic/safety management on the road. This is a brilliant piece of equipment that makes such events safer and also brings smiles to the kids who loaded up the bags afterwards. We will be seeing you out and about for the rest of the week and next week of the weather stays fine and sunny Strokestown Tidy Town Group took our An Taisce National Spring Clean campaign out to Kiltrustan National School. The ‘ickle’ ones tackled the graveyard adjacent to the school while the older crew headed for the hedgerows. Like bees in a hive, the wee ones had speed and energy in bag fulls. The more seasoned students were methodical and strategic in their approach. The future of the Kiltrustansports Club is bright with such wonderful young people and we look forward to seeing you all at their Sports Day later this year. Massive THANK YOU to the staff who were fantastically helpful and supportive and CONGRATULATIONS on being awarded another Green Flag. Again the RTV from Sliabh Báwn Community Amenity Group proved hugely beneficial with traffic control, especially with the HGV/truck traffic. The penultimate school on the Strokestown Tidy Town Group whirlwind An Taisce National Spring Clean week was St Patricks National School. A quick run around the Boreen Road saw some seriously tough competition between the lads but again a great result with the Health Centre providing a large amount of litter. Massive THANK YOU to the staff again for their support and CONGRATULATIONS on another Green Flag winner in Strokestown. Once again the Sliabh Báwn Community Amenity Group RTV proved a huge hit with the lads and was extremely helpful in collecting all the bags and helping to bring the message across of their and our efforts. The 2023 Tidy Towns judging process will be starting soon (with adjudicators visiting Strokestown (unannounced) so we are asking all residents and businesses to please continue your efforts in maintaining your estates, your shopfronts and the Town. The "Tidy Town Core Group" are all busy in their own estates and already excited about the Club Clean Up Day . Between new bins (with super support from the environmental department of Roscommon County Council emptying those and organising for the sweeper to be in town regularly) it is very easy to see the time, effort and energy being put in. THANK YOU St. Mary's Primary School Strokestown completed our schools An Taisce National Spring Clean in the area. Some beautiful sunshine only beaten by the laughs of the kids. Massive THANK YOU to the teachers who were also out today enjoying the early summer sun. See you all on June 3rd for the ... "Club & Community Clean Up Day" Today, Strokestown Tidy Town Group were out in the beautiful cemetery in Lisonuffy assisting the Ballybeg Development and Cemetery Committee. Lisonuffy is situated at the foot of Sliabh Báwn only a short walk from Franks Bar and Mountain Brew. There are huge historic, religious and social connections with Cloontuskert (The Abbey). This really shows again the need for a Community Employment Scheme in our area, with cemeteries like Lisonuffy, Bumlin, the Famine Burial Ground in Cloonslanor needing to be maintained. The plots of families who have gone before are as important to our heritage and history as we are to their future. Hopefully Roscommon Leader Partnership and Roscommon County Council will help the Sliabh Báwn Community Amenity Group in realising their efforts in getting a CE scheme to the region.
Massive THANK YOU to Byron, our in-house photographic wizard 📸, for taking the images of the parade for us here at Strokestown Tidy Town Group (and his wonderful wife Beverly for accompanying the Chair) ❤️ A word of note and thank you to Tommy Carolan for his float on behalf of us as a group. Well done to everyone who came out in the drizzle and helped make the day a little bit better for everyone 👏👏👏👏👏 Strokestown Tidy Towns Group, Scramogue Tidy Towns, Cloontuskert Tidy Towns, Ballyleague Tidy Towns & Franks Bar (working collectively as part of the Sliabh Báwn Community Amenity Group) are responsible for the RTV seen in the last picture 👏👏
